XLS and XLSX compared
XLS is the binary format of Excel 97 to 2003 and is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet. XLSX, the format of Excel 2007 and later, supports 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, stores data as compressed XML and is usually smaller. Google Sheets, Numbers and mobile apps also handle XLSX more reliably, so converting old spreadsheets makes them easier to share and edit.
