AAC and Apple Lossless inside M4A
An M4A file can contain either AAC (lossy, used by Voice Memos and most iTunes downloads) or ALAC (Apple Lossless, used for high-quality music). Both are converted to standard PCM WAV. For ALAC files the WAV is a perfect copy of the original sound; for AAC files it keeps the quality exactly as it is now.
